Woman with a Water Pitcher
-after Vermeer

This piece was one of those where I needed something to challenge me back into painting after a nearly two year break.

It was one of my favorite paintings of Vermeer's and on a friend's suggestion to redo another Dutch Master it was just what I needed to get my paint flowing again.

As I did with my version of Vermeer's "The Milkmaid", I focused on the figure rather than to remake the entire original composition.

Truck

'51 Chevy Truck

At a gallery opening a few years ago, I saw this truck that the gallery owner had. From the moment I saw it, I knew I had to paint it. The following weekend I went back to take a few pictures of it.

It took me about two years to complete since there were periods of time I needed to step away rather than allow myself to rush the work.

While it's not completely true to the original, I did create an almost cartoon version of this beautifully kept vehicle.

The main challenge for me was to render the chrome as accurately as I could.

The Walrus was Paul

I had gotten an email from the publisher of a new book featuring art that was specifically influenced by Beatlemania.

During the 60's, many people felt that Beatles' music held hidden meanings, especially surrounding an urban legend about Paul McCartney having been killed in a car crash. Many fans, including me, were scouring the lyrics and album art searching for "clues".

I decided to incorporate a few specific references in this one, right down to my color choices.

Hotel Del

The Hotel Del Coronado

I received a commission to paint The Hotel Del Coronado from a woman who recently moved away from San Diego and felt that this was a great way to stay connected to her roots.

Having never been to San Diego myself, I had to rely on the Hotel's website for source photos.

I learned that this hotel was supposedly haunted by a woman who had been found dead at it's doorsteps back in the 19 the century. As the story goes she was the female half of a couple of con artists that frequently preyed on the hotel's gambling clientele.

Since she is such a part of the folklore of this beautiful building, I included her in the painting but I won't tell you where I've referenced her.

Once you see her, you'll always see her in the painting. Try your luck.

The Milkmaid - after Vermeer

This was the first Vermeer I attempted. Again, I was focussed on the expression of the subject.

This painting was shown at the Phoenix Art Museum and was sold at a charity auction.

Still Life

Still Life: Nothing but Time

I was drawn a photo of this man asleep on a bench from a postcard I'd seen. Again I was driven to capture him as he sat there.

Weary, weather beaten, his feet seemed like leather in the hot sun. It made me realize that at a certain time in all of our lives, we'll be waiting for the end to come.

Don Quixote

Over the years many artists have taken a brush to Don Quixote.

Simply stated, this was my turn.

I tried to bring out the emotion in his eyes as he focused on his dream. I've always seen him as somewhat of a comic character in the way we each have a certain cartoonishness about us.
